Legacies of African Enslavement in Hackney

Legacies of African Enslavement in Hackney Full Film from Hackney Museum on Vimeo.

This film was made by Martha McAlpine and accompanies the resources found in the teaching resources section of this website. It explores the legacies of Hackney’s historical link to transatlantic slavery through the stories of people who were involved in the business of slavery in Hackney as well as those, both in the Caribbean and the UK, who fought to end African enslavement.

The film features archival material, interviews and dramatisation.
It asks:
– Who were slave-owners in Hackney?
– How did enslaved Africans fight against enslavement?
– How did people in Hackney campaign for abolition?
– What are some of the legacies of African enslavement?
